Reduce Stress with these Back to School Tips

Adult_Daughter_stressed-LR.jpgBeing a family caregiver can be stressful on its own. When you combine that with getting your own kids ready for school, you can be overwhelmed. Life as member of the sandwich generation is never dull. If you are not taking your children to school, you are helping your elderly relatives do errands or visit the doctor. The beginning of the school year is especially hectic with back-to-school shopping for clothing and school supplies. The key to getting it all done while keeping your blood pressure down is to follow these back to school tips.

Staying Organized for Back-to-School

1. Start Early

Since plans are often changed when caring for seniors and children, it is best if you plan ahead and start your back-to-school activities early. This gives you extra time to get ready, just in case of disruptions.

2. Ask for Help

There is no reason you can't ask your relatives and friends for help with caregiving or getting your kids ready for school. If you know of another parent who is going shopping for school supplies, ask them to take your kids along. Or maybe someone can stay with your senior for an hour to give you time to take kids shopping.

3. Give Kids Tasks

Depending on their age, your children can help out. Have them check their supplies from last year against this year's list. You can make a game of it and reward them when done. Then they will be engaged and ready when you go shopping for new supplies. You can also have a fashion show with last year's school clothes to see what you need to buy for this year. Kids can parade through the living room showing off their fashions.

4. Take Time for Yourself

Whether it means getting up early or just taking 10 minutes here or there, spend at least a few minutes each day meditating or sitting quietly. Sometimes we just need a break to lower stress.

5. Keep Paperwork Together

It is a good rule of thumb to keep all of your paperwork organized in one location. That makes it easy to find when you need to turn it in on the first day of school.
